Stone Town is a maze on purpose. Coral stone houses, carved doors, balconies that almost touch overhead. Your guide grew up in these alleyways and walks them the way you walk your own street.

You visit the old fort, the former slave market and the Anglican cathedral built on top of it. You pass the house where Freddie Mercury was born. You stop where the smells are good: the Darajani market, coffee sellers, a bakery if it is open.

This is a walking tour, paced for you. Questions welcome. Detours encouraged.

Abdalla, or one of his trusted friends

Born and raised on Zanzibar. Abdalla guides whenever he can. When he is fully booked, a guide from his own circle steps in. All of them from the island, all of them vetted.

How much walking is it?
Around 3 kilometres at a slow pace, with plenty of stops. Wear comfortable shoes. The alleyways are shaded for most of the day.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. The market and the carved doors usually win them over. Tell us their ages when you book and your guide adjusts the route.
